Do not Fold!

All is revealed. Flee Immediately!

A PDF-web is a PDF-print. Today, anyone can publish online with social media tools. But as an artist considers the pigment in every paint mixture, why don't we consider the code in every display? Moving away from PDF's and print screens, Flee Immediately! is a publishing and exhibition platform of critical ideas in critical formats. It is about getting us to think critically about the technologies we use everyday, the designs we interact with and the control we have.
There is a lot more below the fold

Flee Immediately! the ABOUT

A PDF-web is a PDF-print. Today, anyone can publish online with social media tools... But as an artist considers the pigment in every paint mixture, why don't we consider the code in every display? Moving away from PDF's and print screens, Flee Immediately! is a publishing platform of critical ideas in critical formats. It is about getting us to think critically about the technologies we use everyday, the designs we interact with and the control we have.
Flee Immediately! is a publishing platform... that publishs ideas that link technology with society and culture. Sometimes by thinking of technology we can come to understand the why's and how's of this crazy world we live in, or vice versa.
But Flee Immediately! is NOT your typical publishing platform... we don't want to publish for publishing sake. We want to publish in ways that best represent our ideas, and therefore, content is linked with how you read it - what we call the structure, and sometimes even the code. Imagine a book, but this time, you need 3D glasses to read the page, or you have to fold each page to connect one idea to the other, or you simply have to turn it upside down. And then, come back to think of the theme while you do this 'reading'. Each issue will be unique. How will this look? Well it all depends on the theme and content. Anything is possible! (at least we can try...)
Flee Immediately! is about design... but it wants to question the design standards that we are used to. To think beyond design into other contexts, into culture, into power structures, into technology and into content. What other possibilities are out there?
Flee Immediately! is digital, an online publishing... but it is also print. It's possible that the next issue could have print elements as well. Print learns from the digital and the digital learns from print. We see both as a technology. And the 'experts' all disagree where the boundaries are anyway.
Flee Immediately! is a place to learn... we will learn as we do and you can learn as you explore. We aren't afraid to try out new ideas, and we hope that each issue will help you to think a bit more about technology and culture. It is important for all of us to at least understand the logic of our computer. We may not be able to solve the error, but we can at least learn where to look. And we can all find ways into technology. They don't just have to be geeky, complex textbook stuff. Why not through dancing or poetry?
But Flee Immediately! is NOT a place to get all the answers... We may sometimes have our opinions on things. But the content may sometimes disagree. The ideas may be complex. But we hope that you at least ask questions, interpret it in your own way, understand one thing out of twenty, understand this one thing but disagree, think of something completely different. That's what helps this all to thrive.
And Flee Immediately! is more than just publishing... we want to bring things off the screen, and off the page. We want to create larger discussions. Hosts events and workshops. Get hands on. We don't just want to read, we want to dance as well.
To not let the structure close in, but to open up: to flee immediately is to ironically explore remaining.

Flee Immediately! Issue 01 MANUAL

Instruction 1:
Colors to use: Pure Black. C=0,M=0,Y=0,K=100.

Black out and we are all doomed. The K slowly exudes itself onto sheet after sheet. Incessantly in motion, impossible to backup, Flee Immediately? But no, time is not on our hands: mechanism moves to override manual. K-K processes prints to dot-dot. The incessant turning of the wheel only serves to fill any voids that remain to be discovered. And the voided elements are only there to serve in the oblivion of the black. We cannot Flee Immediately; we must remain exploring.

Instruction 2:

Dimensions: Please print on A1, as per instructions, fold down to A5.

Blink once and the doom is still there. The sheets slowly contrive into the fate of their line by line. Glaring of the screen, glitch of sight, Flee Immediately?

Flee Immediately! Issue 00

All codes seem to begin with a defining element, whether it be use simple;, doctype html, or #!/usr/bin/perl. Each element sets up the structure of the code. But what’s inside the structure, as long as it follows the order - the rules that define it, can be changed and adapted: creativity within limits.

This editorial will be no different. It’s the defining element of the structure of the journal. But at the same time it is different. It’s a call to finally see in between, to form, re-form and see the details. To not let the structure close in, but to open up: to flee immediately is to ironically explore remaining.

It all started as a gap, a gap that Flee Immediately! does not flee but takes as its guide. In the world of looking for jobs and explaining what you do, sometimes you just don’t fit the code, the check box, or the other way around. No I do not design websites and create phone applications. There is more to it than that.

Flee Immediately! is a forum for ‘the more to it’. It attempts to develop within this gap, speaking against, using, critiquing, endlessly re-imagining, the coded perceptions of ‘interactive media’, the ‘media art world’, and ’...‘, while creating its own new code...
